Stump Grinding for Homeowners
Request an estimate first

A stump is easy to ignore until the mower hits it, a child trips on it, or shoots start sprouting by the patio. Stump grinding uses a machine to chew the stump down below ground level. Then the area can be filled with soil and planted with grass or a new tree.
Skillcondition Tree Service is a referral service. We do not grind stumps ourselves. We connect homeowners in the Godfrey area with independent providers in our network. You can request an estimate, compare more than one approach, and choose the provider that fits your yard and budget. Estimate first, no obligation.
First, check whether the stump is a hazard right now
Start with a quick look. Do this before you compare anything.
- Is the stump tall, jagged or split?
- Is it in a walking path, driveway edge or play area?
- Is it leaning, cracked or sitting under loose branches?
If any answer is yes, rope it off or mark it. Keep kids and pets away. Then request an estimate so providers can tell you what they would do.
Stumps left after a storm
Severe thunderstorms and hail can snap a trunk and leave a rough, splintered stump. First, make the area safe. Next, get the fallen wood cleared. Then deal with the stump.
Storm tree clearance versus stump work
Storm tree clearance and stump grinding are often two separate jobs. Some providers do both on one visit. Others only do one. Ask which is included in the estimate so nothing is missed.
Problems an old stump causes
A stump is not harmless just because the tree is gone. Here is what it can bring.
Trip and mower hazards
Stumps hide in tall grass. They damage mower blades and cause falls.
Pests and decay
Rotting wood can attract ants, termites and beetles. Fungus and mushrooms often follow after humid summers.
Sprouts and roots
Many stumps send up shoots for years. Roots can also push toward pipes, slabs and basement walls.
How stump grinding works
A provider brings a grinder with a spinning cutting wheel. The wheel shaves the stump into wood chips, a little at a time.
The usual steps
1. The provider checks the site for buried lines, rocks and fences. 2. The grinder is set up close to the stump. 3. The stump is ground down, often several inches below the surface. 4. Chips are raked up or left in the hole.
Most grinding removes the stump and the top of the main roots. It does not pull out the whole root system.
Grinding versus full stump removal
These two options are not the same. Compare them side by side.
- Grinding: faster, less digging, less mess. Roots stay in the ground and slowly rot.
- Full removal: the stump and major roots are dug out. It costs more and leaves a bigger hole.
For lawn, garden beds or a new tree in a different spot, grinding is usually enough. If you plan to pour concrete or build over the area, ask about removal.
What affects the price
Price depends on the job, so get a written quote. These points matter most.
- Stump diameter and height
- Hardness of the wood
- Number of stumps
- Access, such as gates, slopes and tight side yards
- Hidden rocks, old fencing or roots near utilities
- Chip cleanup and fill soil
See the cost table on this page for typical U.S. ranges.
Getting ready for grinding day
First, clear toys, hoses and furniture from the work area. Next, tell the provider where sprinkler lines, pet fences, septic parts and cables run. Then make sure the machine can reach the stump.
Check the yard layout
Many older frame houses and ranch homes have buried lines that were added over many decades. Utility marking is often needed before digging or grinding deep. Ask the provider how that is handled.
Grinding stumps left from past removals
An old stump from a past removal can still be ground. Weathered wood is often softer, but it may hide rocks or hardened roots. Mention how long it has been there. Providers can then plan the right equipment.
If a tree still needs to come down first, that is a separate job. Check the tree removal page for that.
What to do after grinding
1. Rake out any extra chips. 2. Fill the hole with topsoil, and add more as it settles. 3. Seed or lay sod, or plant a shrub or tree.
Cold winters and spring wet spells
Deep frost can heave loose fill. Spring flooding can wash soil away. If the hole is near a sump pump discharge or a low spot, ask where the chips and soil should go.
Questions to ask each provider
Use the same list for every estimate. It keeps the comparison fair.
- How deep will the grinding go?
- Are chip cleanup and fill included?
- Is there a minimum fee?
- How are extra stumps priced?
- What happens if hidden objects are found?
- Can I get the scope in writing?
Compare, then decide
Line up two or three estimates. Look at depth, cleanup and total price, not just the number at the bottom. You can say no to any of them. There is no pressure and no obligation.

What's Included
Grinding Below Grade
Providers grind the stump down below ground level so the lawn can be repaired.
Root Flare Work
Surface roots near the stump can often be ground too, which clears trip spots.
Chip Cleanup Options
Ask whether chips are raked, hauled off or left for you to use as mulch.
Multiple Stump Jobs
Have several stumps from past removals? Providers can often quote them together in one visit.
Typical Stump Grinding Prices
These are typical U.S. ranges only. Real prices vary by stump size, access and local rates. Always get a written quote from each provider before you agree.
| Item | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small stump (under 12 in.) | $100 – $300 | Easy access keeps it near the low end |
| Medium stump (12–24 in.) | $200 – $500 | Common for yard trees |
| Large stump (over 24 in.) | $400 – $1,000 | Hard wood and wide roots add time |
| Minimum service fee | $100 – $250 | Often applies to a single small stump |
| Hard-to-reach site | $100 – $400 | Narrow gates and slopes need smaller machines |
| Full stump and root removal | $300 – $1,200 | More digging, bigger hole to fill |

No obligationStump Grinding FAQ
How deep does stump grinding go?
Many providers grind about 4 to 12 inches below the surface. That is deep enough for grass or small plants. For a new tree or building work nearby, ask for a deeper grind or full removal.
Is stump grinding or stump removal better?
Grinding is usually quicker, neater and less costly. Full removal digs out the major roots too, which suits building or paving. Ask providers to price both so you can compare before you choose.
Can a stump be ground after it has been there for years?
Yes. Old stumps can still be ground, and dry wood is often easier to cut. Providers may find rocks or hard roots, so mention how long it has been there and ask how surprises are priced.
